Owner & Author Message

Greetings, All!  I am K-M. Denyse Jones and the owner & author of Natural Hair Nysa!  I am a proud wife, sister to 4 siblings (we are all natural), recreational singer, and total ham in front of the camera.  I don’t have a Ph.D. in Trichology (study of the scalp & hair) nor hold a cosmetologist license.  However, I consider myself a hair enthusiast because of my constant quest for more and better natural hair knowledge.  I also play amateur hair product mixologist.

When I am away from Natural Hair Nysa, I spend time working as an environmental & safety consultant to industry.  I hold a science-based bachelors degree.  As such, I love experimentation.  I subscribe to the following hair mottos: “When you find something that works, stick with it!” and “This is the way my hair grows out of my scalp, and I am blessed!”

I began transitioning from relaxed to natural hair in 2011.  My reasons for the change revolved around my need to travel for work.  Every time I packed for a trip, I found myself having to take a flat/curling iron, blow dryer, and all my products.  That got old really quick, so I decided to streamline.  Eventually the situation led to my hair transition.

“My hair is a hot mess.” and “Why isn’t it growing?” sum up my first few years as a natural.  I spent the better part of 2 decades with relaxed hair.  My mother, grandmother, and stylist cared for my natural hair when I was a child.  So, I had not the knowledge nor skill base to care for my natural hair in adulthood.

This changed in 2015 when a certain brand of shampoo I was using had some negative hair results among its users.  Scandal populated the airways, prompting me to change products.  I started doing some research to find a shampoo that would help me with my “hair is not growing” problem.   I ended up finding a rather large tribe of knowledgeable people and a wealth of information on how to care for my natural hair.  Let’s just say I got hooked.

As I experimented with my hair care, I noticed slight improvements in my hair health.  I stayed diligent in my practices, performed a significant cut to rid my hair of its final heat damage, and waited patiently.  After several months, people actually started complimenting me on my hair.  Not long after that, certain family members began asking about what I was doing to my hair and how I got my hair to do that (as if I was keeping some secret from them).  This was when I decided I needed to join the larger conversation and help support others has I felt supported when I started on my journey.

It takes a village, tribe, community, etc. to obtain continued success in any journey!  I look forward to sharing my continued adventure with all of you!
